Men’s Eating Disorder Treatment
While the numbers are staggering and have been a steep increase for women with eating disorders, it is equally as staggering for men. Moreover, an eating disorder is often thought to only effect women, but, in fact, has the same devastating effect for men.
It is estimated that at least 10% of the 8 million people in the United States suffering from an Eating Disorder are men. However this number is presumed to be understated because there is so little education defining the eating disorder for men that many deny or don’t recognize they are suffering from an eating disorder. Furthermore, because eating disorders are thought to only effect women many men find it hard to seek or find the treatment they need. These complexities come in and are caused in different ways. For instance, generally speaking there is always a tremendous amount of shame for those with eating disorders, but for men in particular that shame is often worse and compounded by the secrecy having a problem that in that is so often considered to be a “female” problem.
Men tend to be medically overweight before the onset of the eating disorder. Not surprisingly, men may also go undiagnosed because it is more socially acceptable for a man to overeat or be overweight than women. Likewise, once the eating disorder begins, the eating disorder behavior is unrecognized even if there is substantial weight loss, as eating disorders are not thought to effect men.
Likewise, men who participate in low-weight oriented sports such as jockeys, wrestlers and runners or those who excessively exercise in general are at an increased risk of developing an Eating Disorder such as Anorexia or Bulimia. The pressure to succeed, to be the best, to be competitive and to win at all costs, combined with any non-athletic pressures in their lives (relationship issues, family problems, abuse, etc.) can contribute the onset of their disordered eating.
The most important thing to remember is that most of the underlying psychological factors that lead to an Eating Disorder are the same for both men and women. In addition, all of the physical dangers and complications associated with being the sufferer of an Eating Disorder are the same. Rosewood’s programs are designed to meet you where you are and can help you find the happiness and self-love you deserve.

The psychiatrist, in collaboration with the clinical team, will work with each resident to effectively treat and stabilize any co-existing disorders. Private sessions with the psychiatrist, primary therapist and registered dietitian continue on a weekly basis throughout treatment.
